Today, breeding for disease resistance traits is a pivotal objective for the fungicide reduction and the achievement of a sustainable agriculture. However, the change in defence strategies by means of (mid-)resistant varieties can cause the re-emergence and spread of disease considered secondary, as black rot (BR, caused by Phyllosticta ampelicida) in viticulture. Under favorable dump conditions, BR is able to devastate the entire grape production. On this basis, The DAMAGE project is part of the combi-Grape agreement between Edmund Mach Foundation (FEM) and the Institute for Grapevine Breeding (JKI-Geilweilerhof) for the introgression of BR resistance into mildew resistant grapevine varieties and the development and validation of a new molecular toolkit of markers reliable and suitable for marker-assisted breeding programs.
