Tick borne encephalitis is emerging in several european countries. Prevention of new cases and mitigation of the risk for the european citizens should be based on a precise estimate of the burden of the disease at Eu level and temporal variation in infection risk. Differences in surveillance systems and diagnostic approaches used in the various european countries however need to be accounted.
