This work focuses on the P.I.C.A. project (Piattaforma Integrata Cartografica Agriviticola), developed by CAVIT s.c. in collaboration with Fondazione Edmund Mach, Fondazione Bruno Kessler and MPA Solutions, about the landscape classification for viticulture, as a tool to properly choose the grapevine variety, which best fits the environmental conditions. The P.I.C.A. database consists of about 35.000 single cadastral parcels, and it covers more than 5.000 hectars representing the spatial distribution of the grapevine varieties of the 11 wineries associated with CAVIT. It covers the Provinces of Trento, Bolzano and Verona. One of the aims of the PICA project is to assess for each variety the current topographic and bioclimatic growing conditions, and to provide a tool to assist the grapevine selection, by comparing the properties of a selected site to the conditions of all the varieties grown in the viticulture region. A proper choice of varieties that best fit the environmental conditions, could result in a reduction of the energy and matter inputs, required to maintain the crop and to ensure an optimal production in terms of quantity, quality and sanitary status. This means, in turn, sustainability!
